Description
Number of Tests Included:
Single test including:
Bacterial Culture
Antibiotic Sensitivity (AST)
What is a Urine Culture and Sensitivity Test?
A microbiological test that identifies bacteria in the urine and determines which antibiotics can best treat the infection.
Purpose of the Test:
Diagnose urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Identify the exact bacteria causing infection
Guide antibiotic treatment
Check for recurrent or chronic infections
Evaluate treatment failure or resistance
Who Should Get This Test?
Individuals with burning urination, frequent urination, or pelvic pain
Patients with fever or suspected UTI
Pregnant women with UTI symptoms
People with recurrent kidney or bladder infections
Individuals not responding to initial antibiotic treatment
Components of the Test:
Urine culture (bacterial growth)
Colony count
Identification of organism
Antibiotic Sensitivity Testing (AST)
Understanding the Test Report:
Significant bacterial growth → Confirms UTI
Colony count >10⁵ CFU/mL → Strongly suggestive of infection
Sensitivity chart → Indicates which antibiotics are “Sensitive,” “Intermediate,” or “Resistant”
No growth → No infection (unless falsely negative)
Preparation and Procedure:
Collect midstream clean-catch urine
Use sterile container
Avoid contamination with skin or vaginal flora
Best submitted to lab within 1 hour or refrigerated
How is the Test Done?
Urine is placed on culture media and incubated to allow bacterial growth. The identified organisms are then tested against a panel of antibiotics.
Best Time for Test:
Anytime; early morning sample preferred for accuracy.
