Description
Number of Tests Included:
Culture for bacteria/fungi
Identification of organism
Antibiotic Sensitivity Test (AST)
What is a Swab C/S Test?
A microbiology test that checks for infectious organisms at the sample site using a sterile swab. It helps diagnose localized infections and guides treatment.
Purpose of the Test:
Diagnose bacterial or fungal infections at the sample site
Identify specific microorganisms causing infection
Determine which antibiotics will work
Evaluate non-healing wounds, throat pain, discharge, or skin infections
Who Should Get This Test?
Individuals with throat pain, pus, or tonsil infections
People with non-healing wounds or ulcers
Patients with ear, nose, or sinus infections
Women with abnormal vaginal discharge
Individuals with skin, nail, or soft tissue infections
Components of the Test:
Culture (bacterial/fungal)
Colony identification
Antibiotic Sensitivity Testing (AST)
Understanding the Test Report:
Growth detected → Organism identified (e.g., Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Candida, E. coli)
Antibiotic Sensitivity:
S – Sensitive
I – Intermediate
R – Resistant
No growth → No infection detected
Preparation and Procedure:
No fasting
Avoid applying creams, ointments, or mouthwash (for throat swab) before the test
A sterile swab is gently rubbed at the infection site
How is the Test Done?
The swab sample is placed on culture media, incubated, and examined for organism growth. Identified organisms undergo sensitivity testing.
Best Time for Test:
During active infection or when symptoms are present.
