Description
Number of Tests Included:
Blood Culture
Organism Identification
Antibiotic Sensitivity (AST)
What is a Blood C/S Test?
A microbiology test that checks for the presence of infectious organisms in the bloodstream and determines which antibiotics will be most effective for treatment.
Purpose of the Test:
Diagnose sepsis (blood infection)
Detect bloodstream infections (BSI)
Identify bacteria or fungi spreading through blood
Choose the correct antibiotic treatment
Monitor treatment response in serious infections
Who Should Get This Test?
Individuals with high fever, chills, or rapid heartbeat
Patients suspected of sepsis
Hospitalized or ICU patients
Individuals with low BP or severe infection
People with persistent fever despite treatment
Patients with indwelling catheters or medical devices
Components of the Test:
Blood culture in aerobic & anaerobic bottles
Growth detection
Microorganism identification
Antibiotic Sensitivity Testing (AST)
Understanding the Test Report:
Growth detected → Organism identified (e.g., E. coli, Staphylococcus, Candida)
Sensitivity result:
S – Sensitive (antibiotic works)
I – Intermediate
R – Resistant (antibiotic does not work)
No growth → No infection detected (may need repeat if symptoms persist)
Preparation and Procedure:
No fasting required
Blood drawn using strict sterile technique
Often taken from two different sites to improve accuracy
How is the Test Done?
Blood is added to culture bottles and incubated in automated systems. If organisms grow, they are identified and tested against antibiotics.
Best Time for Test:
Before starting antibiotics, or when fever spikes.
Booking and Checking Reports:
You can book the Blood C/S test via SDL, arrange home collection (if available), and access your digital report online.
