What is a GCT Test?
A screening test during the 24–28 weeks of pregnancy to determine how well the body handles sugar. If results are high, a confirmatory OGTT (Oral Glucose Tolerance Test) is advised.
Purpose of the Test:
Screen for gestational diabetes
Identify high-risk pregnancies
Prevent pregnancy complications related to high sugar
Ensure mother and baby’s health
Who Should Get This Test?
All pregnant women between 24–28 weeks
Pregnant women with obesity, PCOS, or family history of diabetes
Women with previous history of gestational diabetes
Those with a history of large baby (>4 kg)
Components of the Test:
Blood glucose level measured 1 hour after drinking 50g glucose solution
Understanding the Test Report:
<140 mg/dL → Normal
140–199 mg/dL → Borderline; may need OGTT
≥200 mg/dL → High; likely gestational diabetes (confirmation needed)
Preparation and Procedure:
No fasting required
Drink 50g glucose solution
Blood drawn exactly 1 hour later
How is the Test Done?
A blood sample is analyzed using biochemical glucose measurement tools after glucose intake.
Best Time for Test:
During 24–28 weeks of pregnancy (or earlier if high-risk).
